Word counter

Type or paste your text and watch the count update as you go: words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, reading time and keyword density. Nothing is uploaded.

Your text

Counts update as you type. Urdu and Arabic are supported too.

Ready when you are. Private: text stays in this tab.

How this counter counts

  • Words. A word is a run of characters separated by spaces, tabs or line breaks that contains at least one letter or number. “don’t” counts once; a lone dash or full stop does not count.
  • Characters. The first figure is the full length of the text. “Without spaces” removes spaces, tabs and line breaks — that is the number most forms mean.
  • Sentences. A sentence ends with a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark, ellipsis or the Urdu full stop (۔). Abbreviations such as “Dr.” can inflate the count by one, so treat it as a guide.
  • Paragraphs and lines. A paragraph is a block of text separated by a blank line. A line is a line that contains at least one character.
  • Reading and speaking time. Reading uses 200 words per minute and speaking 130 words per minute — ordinary editorial averages. Dense, technical or non-native text takes longer.
  • Keyword density. Each word’s share of all words, after ignoring the most common English and Urdu function words. It is a diagnostic, not a target.
Nothing is sent anywhere. There is no upload, account or tracking of the text itself — the count is calculated by JavaScript in this page and disappears when you close the tab.

Where a word count is checked

  • Essays and applications. Universities and scholarship forms enforce hard limits, often 250, 500 or 1,000 words.
  • Meta titles and descriptions. Search results truncate around 60 characters for a title and 155–160 for a description.
  • Social posts. Captions and posts have character limits that differ by platform and account type.
  • Translation and subtitling. Word and character counts decide quotes, timing and how many lines fit on screen.
  • Invoices and legal text. Character counts help keep a description within a printed field.

Questions people ask

Is my text sent to a server?

No. The counting happens inside this page, in your browser. There is no upload endpoint, the text is not stored, and it disappears when you close the tab.

How are words counted?

A word is any run of characters separated by spaces, tabs or line breaks that contains at least one letter or number. Punctuation alone is not counted as a word. The method works for English, Urdu, Arabic and other scripts.

What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?

Characters with spaces is the full length of the text. Characters without spaces removes every space, tab and line break. Forms that set a strict limit usually mean characters without spaces.

How is reading time calculated?

The counter allows 200 words per minute for silent reading and 130 words per minute for speaking aloud, which are common editorial averages for adults reading everyday text. Technical or academic material takes longer.

What is keyword density?

It is how often a word appears as a share of all words. The panel ignores common words such as the, and, is and of, then shows the most repeated words. There is no magic percentage — writing for the reader matters more than hitting a number.
